03/05/24 - shy of the limelight
For the past two days the owls skipped the usual daytime roosting. Hmmm. I still want to believe they are off enjoying the freedom they have now; when (and if) the eggs arrive her movements will dramatically decrease for the better part of two months. They returned at sunset last night and after kicking up all the nesting material, she called continuously for over an hour from both nest and perch. I don’t recall such lengthy vocalizations in past years. Yesterday they also had a moment in the limelight, as our local tv station kxan ran a story about them on the news and I was reminded it is time to name this pair.
This morning they arrived about an hour before sunrise and she immediately tossed the wood shavings around, scratching and kicking. He came to the perch a couple times and she spent about 40 minutes in the nest before they left.
